In Ayurveda, any type of mental illness is known as Dimagi Bimari. Insanity and other mental diseases are much more difficult to understand than other physical diseases. The fast industrialization and excessive crowding, the day by day increasing competition, unnecessary hurry and worry are some of the important factors. Mental disorders are of many grades. It may range from mild peculiarities to temporary delirium.
CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS
Any mental disorder arises from either a disease or when the working of that part of the nervous system which controls and conducts is not proper. There are two groups for the causes of mental disorders.
GROUP 1 – PEOPLE WHO ARE REGULARLY SUBJECTED TO GREAT STRAINS WITHOUT DEVELOPING ANY MENTAL DISORDER.
GROUP 2 – PEOPLE WHO HAVE A TENDENCY TO BECOME INSANE AT SOME PONIT OF TIME IN LIFE WHEN CERTAIN CAUSES ARISE.
The main causes of any mental disorders are abnormal temperament, heredity, alcoholism, improper blood circulation, sudden shock, senile degeneration, disease of the nervous system.
VARITIES OF MENTAL DISORDER – Mental disorder can be placed in two categories
- NEUROSES – it is a mild form of mental disorder. In this the patient has a general emotional feeling of anxiety.
- PSYCHOSES – manic depressive psychosis, mania, melancholia, paranoia and certain states of confusion fall in this category.
According to ayurveda, there are large varieties of insanity cases. The causative factors are the vitiation of the three doshas, mental or physical shocks and weakness of the nervous system.
MEDICINES AND PRESCRIPTIONS
Depending upon the cause of the problem, different treatments are carried out. If the vitiation of the dosha is the reason for the cause of insanity, Ghritas which are certain ghee preparations are given to the patient. If it is due to the vitiation of pitta, certain purgatives are given and if insanity is due to the vitiation of kapha dosha, the patent should be made to vomit.
The ayurvedic medicines given below are very helpful for the treatment of insanity of any type.

| 20ml should be taken daily mixed with equal quantity of water two times daily after meals. |
| 75mg of Rajat Bhasma and 10gm of Chadravaleha should betaken twice daily with cow’s milk. |
| It should be mixed in the food of he patient. |
| 250mg of Praval Pishti, 1gm of Shankhapushpi Churna and 125mg of Chaturbhuja Rasa to be taken two times daily with honey. |
| 250mg to be given with milk. |
| 250 mg to be given with honey. |
| 15-20mg can be taken. |
| 250mg with ginger juice should be taken. |
| 250mg should be taken with cow’s ghee. |
| These should be in the paste form and applied on the fore head of the patient. |
| It should be used for massaging the head of the patient. |
HOME REMEDIES
Ø The patient should be given castor oil at least twice a week so that his bowels are clean and he does not suffer from constipation.
Ø Goat’s milk and bhang should be mixed and the paste should be rubbed on the palms and the soles of the feet of the patient during day and at night.
DIET AND OTHER REGIMEN
The patient should be given simple and light food but it should be nutritious.
